excellent and easy to make i also used it without the noodles to create a toffee like, melt in your mouth taste! will definately be making them again-03 Dec 2012

just darling and very good flavor. I made 2 batches; first batch as written in the muffin tins, and found that the nests are quite thick and big. Made the second batch with the suggestion of Breeze and added a few tbsp of peanut butter. With the second batch, I just free-formed them onto parchment paper. No sticking at all, and with the fingertips wet, they were easy to mold into little nests making them a little smaller and got more out of the batch. Used 'peeps' rabbits in some, marshmallow chicks in others, and cadbury pastel chocolate eggs. I like the chocolate flavor with the nest. Love the versatility of this recipe. Could also add some butterscotch morsels to the marshmallow/butter mixture, or chocolate chips. So cute and easy! Nice presentation on the Easter goodie trays. thanks for the recipe.-06 Apr 2007

What a fun recipe. I have made these for years but have always added a little peanut butter to the mixture. This has always been a big hit :-)-25 Sep 2005

No Bake Easter Birds Nest

Ingredients for no bake Easter birds nest

Directions for no bake Easter birds nest

Melt chocolate and peanut butter in the microwave. Heat for 1 minute and stir. Continue to heat for 15-second intervals until the chocolate is fully melted.

Then add the chow mein noodles in a large mixing bowl and pour the chocolate and peanut butter over the top. Stir until all the noodles are completely coated.

Using a large tablespoon, drop onto a silpat baking mat. Wait about a minute or two and form into nests. Press the end of the spoon a little into the nest to create a dip for the little eggs to rest. But make sure there is no hole on the bottom.

Place three chocolate eggs on top before it hardens. You have some time here, so no need to rush.

Let the little nests harden. Pro Tip: place them in the fridge or freezer to harden quicker. Once hardened they are ready to eat.

Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper, or put paper cases into a 12-hole cupcake tray. Set aside.

Break the chocolate into pieces and chop the Mars® bars into small slices. Put them all into a pan with the butter and syrup and melt over a lowheat, stirring regularly to make sure the mixture doesn’t stick or burn. Set aside to cool for a few minutes.

Stir about a third of the Shredded Wheat® into the melted chocolate and mix really well. Continue adding the Shredded Wheat® a little at a time and mixing after each addition. Stop adding if it looks like there is not enough chocolate to cover any more.

Easter Nests Tested Recipe

Melted semi-sweet or milk chocolate and crunchy chow mein noodles are the only two ingredients that you need to make these cute chocolate Easter nests. This recipe, or should I even call it that, involves just mixing the melted chocolate and chow mein noodles together, forming them into individual nest shapes, placing them in the refrigerator to harden, and then filling them with jelly beans or any other type of Easter egg shaped candy.

Chocolate Easter Nests: Line a baking pan with a piece of aluminum foil, smooth the foil, and then butter or spray the foil with a non stick vegetable spray.

Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Gently fold in the chow mein noodles, being careful not to break them.

Spoon six mounds of the mixture onto the prepared pan and, using your fingers, form each mound into a 4 inch (10 cm) nest shape. Make a small indentation in the center of each nest.

Place the pan, with the chocolate nests, in the refrigerator to set (about 30 minutes). Just before serving, remove the nests from the refrigerator and place some small jelly beans or other egg shaped candy in the center of each nest.

These cute Mini Egg Rice Krispie Nests are a fun no-bake Easter dessert kids will love helping to make! (A cute follow-up to our kid-made Easter creme egg cake!)

I first shared this Rice Krispie Nests on my friend’s blog, Amanda’s Cookin’.

Pinterest abounds with jaw-dropping, enticing Easter desserts – but very few of them are easy for kids to make. (Which is funny because who loves holidays more than kids?)

My daughter and daycare kids get so excited when I tell them that we’re going to “bake something” – they love the feeling of accomplishment after making something delicious that they can share, not to mention the opportunity to sneak tastes as we create.

Kids know when they actually are the creators of a dessert versus when they are being patronized – cracking an egg into some batter and then seeing an unrecognizable dessert hours later, so it’s important to me that we pick recipes that they can make from start to finish with very few times that I need to step in beyond providing some gentle direction.

These Mini Egg Easter Nests made with “nests” of Rice Krispies treats and topped with that most addictive of Easter chocolates – Mini Eggs!

After learning about robin’s eggs my kids were obsessed with the pretty “freckles” and their similarity to the mini chocolate eggs so I knew they’d go crazy for any dessert idea using them.

Rice Krispies are quick and easy for kids to help make – I let my daughter (5 years old at the time) help melt the marshmallows in the microwave, while our younger daycare kids helped measure the cereal, count out the marshmallows and form the Rice Krispie nests.

I had the kids wet their hands in a small bowl of water to help prevent the Rice Krispie mixture from sticking to their hands as they formed the nests, but coating hands with a bit of butter or oil will also work.

You can prep these Easter treats up to a week ahead of time and store in an airtight container. They make the perfect Easter treat for kids to make for friends, bring for classroom contribution, or serve as a light Easter dessert. I personally think they look gorgeous as an Easter centrepiece, and how proud would the kids be to see their creations in the centre of a beautifully set table?

This No-Bake Mini Egg Nest recipe is one of the 32 recipes, crafts and decor ideas included in our free Easter Planning Ebook available to our e-mail subscribers:

Ella helped me make a cute little video to show your kids how to make these Rice Krispie Mini Egg Easter Nests, so be sure to check it out before scrolling down to grab your free printable recipe card:

Ingredients to Make Rice Krispie Nests

  • 4 cups marshmallows
  • 5 cups rice cereal
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 cups mini eggs
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips, optional

Kitchen Tools You May Need

  • Large microwave-safe bowl
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Muffin pan

How to Make Easter Rice Krispie Nests

Grease a 12-cup muffin tray and set aside.

Place the marshmallows in a large microwave-safe bowl and heat for 25-30 seconds. Stir well, and repeat heating as needed.

Add the melted coconut oil and vanilla extract to the marshmallows and stir well to incorporate.

Add the rice cereal cup at a time, gently folding it into the marshmallow mixture, until all of the cereal is incorporated.

Scoop heaping 1/4 cup portions of the rice krispie treats into the prepared muffin tray.

Wet your hands and press the rice krispies into a cup or tart-shape.

Place in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight to set.

When the nests have had a chance to set and harden, pop them out of the muffin tray using a butter knife and fill with treats. We used mini eggs but jellybeans or a some berries would also be delicious.

You can either just set the mini eggs in the nests, or add a half Tablespoon of melted chocolate chips to each and then add the mini eggs so that when the chocolate sets and hardens it holds the eggs in place.
