  • 16 large fresh blackberries, divided
  • 4 small fresh thyme sprigs, divided
  • 6 tablespoons 100% blue agave silver tequila
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon Cointreau or other orange liqueur
  • 2 cups ice cubes, divided
  • 1/4 cup chilled sparkling wine

Recipe Preparation

  • Place 14 blackberries and 2 thyme sprigs in medium bowl. Press firmly on solids with muddler or back of wooden spoon until mashed. Mix in tequila, Simple Syrup, lime juice, and Cointreau, then 1 cup ice. Stir to blend well. Strain into large glass measuring cup. Mix in sparkling wine. Divide remaining ice between 2 tall glasses. Pour Margarita mixture over. Garnish each with 1 blackberry and 1 thyme sprig.

A “skinny” margarita is one made with fresh juices and minimal sugar. Margaritas from restaurants typically contain a syrup-y mix loaded with sugar, and little to no fresh juice. The beauty of making your own margaritas at home is the ability to use fresh ingredients, and adjust your own margarita to fit your taste.

Celebrate National Margarita Day with Blackberry Thyme Margaritas

You can tell me it’s National Fill in the Blank Day and I’d say ‘Count me in!’ because I’m all about the celebration. (Within reason, of course.) That’s right, today is National Margarita Day, so I’m grabbing my maracas and shouting from the rooftops in celebration. Oh, and I’m whipping up something good: Blackberry Thyme Margaritas

I was supposed to be departing on Sunday for Barbados for a week of relaxation and cocktails but due to some unforeseen complications that had to be postponed. So you can understand my excitement at the thought of turning an ordinary, cold winter day into a celebration that makes me feel like I’m on warm beach somewhere in the middle of the Caribbean. Is anyone else with me on the this imaginary trip?!

Blackberry Margaritas

Put the blackberries, 1/2 cup sugar, and juice of 1 lime in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil, stirring constantly, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes until thick. Strain through a fine mesh strainer, pressing to get all the liquid out, then place the liquid in the fridge and chill until cold.

To make the lime sugar, zest the 3 limes and lay out on a paper towel to dry for 30 minutes. Add the zest to 1 cup of sugar and mix together. Rub a lime wedge around the rims of margarita glasses and dip in the sugar to coat.

To make the margaritas, fill a blender with ice. Add half the tequila, half the triple sec, the lime juice, and half the blackberry puree. Add a little more sugar if desired. Blend until totally combined and serve. Repeat with another blender full of ice, the rest of the tequila, triple sec, and blackberry puree!

These are utterly delicious!

Today is May 5th&mdashalso known as Cinco de Mayo! And while it obviously isn&rsquot the most sacred of holidays in our country, it is a great day to celebrate Mexican culture&hellipand Mexican food! Before I start with today&rsquos big, beautiful margarita recipe, here&rsquos my Cinco de Mayo category where I have all the Mexican/Tex-Mex recipes on this site in one place:

And speaking of good stuff&hellipif you think you love margaritas now, just wait until you try this one. Gorgeous, colorful, refreshing, delicious&hellipand purple! You&rsquoll be filled with love immediately.

Note: Tread lightly&hellipand sip slowly! They taste so good, it&rsquos easy to forget there&rsquos booze in there.

Another note: For a non-alcoholic version, just sub ginger ale or 7-Up for the booze!

Throw some blackberries into a saucepan. These are juicy, lusciously fresh ones, but you can use frozen if you can&rsquot get fresh!

Next, add some sugar. This is a wonderfully sweet, tart, boozy drink.

Then squeeze in some lime juice!

Now just bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Then reduce the heat and let them cook slowly for 20 to 25 minutes, until the mixture is nice and thick. (Note: This photo was taken about halfway through the cooking process. By the end, most of the berries will be broken up and the mixture will be more syrupy.)

When it&rsquos ready, place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl and strain the berries, pressing to work out as much liquid through as possible. All that should be left behind are seeds and pulp.

And this is what winds up in the bowl. Just a glorious, thick blackberry liquid. I use this same method whenever I make blackberry ice cream. (Oh&hellipthe glory. But that&rsquos another story for another time.) Just refrigerate this until it&rsquos totally cold. You can make it at least a couple of days before you need it!

When it&rsquos margarita time, make some lime sugar to go around the rim of the glasses! Throw some lime zest on a plate of sugar. (I zested the lime, then laid out the zest on paper towels for about an hour to dry it a bit. Keeps it from getting clumpy!

Then I just used my fingers to mix it around until the zest and sugar were totally combined.

Rub a little wedge of lime around the rims&hellip

Then dip the rim in the sugar&hellip

Until it&rsquos coated in the lime sugar.

I&rsquom definitely a sugar-on-the-rim person when it comes to cocktails. So much better than salt!

When the glasses are all ready, fill the blender with ice and add some tequila&hellip

And about half the blackberry puree, along with some lime juice.

You can also add a little more sugar for a little more sweetness&hellipor you can always taste it after it&rsquos blended and add sugar if you think it needs it.

It is mid-summer, so that means the blackberries are almost ripe in the Pacific Northwest and ready to be picked. If you live in a different, hotter part of the country, you might already be enjoying all of the fresh berries that are on offer.

We get beautiful plump and juicy blackberries this time of year that are hard to resist. I can&rsquot pick a bucket of blackberries and not make this refreshing blackberry margarita, which just screams summer to me.

A super simple cocktail to serve up after a long work week, or for your summer bash or your Mexican feast. Nothing beats a sweet, cold, blackberry-infused margarita.

Dinner and drinks?

A cocktail can genuinely complete a nice dinner for me. Sip away as you do the finishing touches to a grilled pork chop or batch of enchiladas. Or whip up a batch of these to watch the sun go down for a late night treat.

This is a super simple drink that carries a &ldquowow factor&rdquo to it. White tequila, fresh blackberries, sweet and sour, lime juice, and of course a simple syrup. You can choose to rim the glass with sugar for the extra sweet, or salt to off-set the berries and enhance the tart factor.

You get a beautiful jewel-toned look to these blackberry margaritas. You can tame down the sweetness by adding more sweet & sour or tequila, but this drink isn&rsquot overly sugary. The blackberries give the drink a natural sweetness, and berries picked at the height of summer usually don&rsquot even require any additional simple syrup.

These margaritas turned out fantastic, and everyone enjoyed them. Garnish with a plump blackberry and even a slice of lime for a gorgeous drink.

Simple Homemade Margaritas with Blackberries

One reason I love homemade margaritas is that they are so simple to make and will give you vibrant and bold flavors, and that can&rsquot compare to store-mixes. You can make them as weak or strong as you want, which I like. Plus, you can experiment with different fruits like peach, mango, mixed berry, or of course, blackberries. Taste as you go to get that perfect blend of flavors.

What about the seeds?

Blackberry seeds are relatively big, especially when compared to other seedy berries like raspberries. If you are really sensitive to that, just run your blended blackberry tequila through a fine mesh strainer to catch any big bits that the blender didn&rsquot pulverize.

The strainer will catch the seeds so you have a smooth drink, instead of sipping and running into seeds. I find this is a great way to get the sweet juice from the blackberries without the seedy texture.

Can You Use Frozen Blackberries in a Blackberry Margarita?

Yes! Frozen blackberries are perfect to make into drinks and cocktails. I would use a fine mesh strainer to deseed the berries before you shake it over ice.

How To Make The Best Margarita

Being a former bartender for over 10 years, I learned some tips and tricks that I&rsquom going to share that will help you perfect your margaritas.

Use GOOD Booze

One tip I have learned over the years is to ensure you are using quality alcohol. You can taste the difference when you buy cheaper tequila over the higher end. I prefer a white tequila, it offers a nice smooth finish to your cocktail.

SHAKE it up baby now When you shake, it chills the drink really quickly without watering it down, and also works great at really blending the flavors and ingredients. Plus, it will give your margarita tiny air bubbles that will give your drink that frothy top that gives the cocktail a little texture. If you serve frozen, blend away, that works great at incorporating the ingredients too. Twist and Shout

Store-bought sweet & sour mix is way extra. You can make your own really easily by boiling some sugar and water with lemon and lime juice.

Come on, come on, come on baby now &ndash come on and WORK IT ON OUT

Drinks are made to be tweaked. Especially drinks made with fresh fruits, there can be variations in the end result depending on the sweetness of your fruit. Make sure to taste as you go and adjust as necessary.

If you find your drink is too tart, you can add more syrup to your drink. If it is too sweet, adding a little more tequila or lime juice as well. Just play around until you find the right flavors that bring your cocktail to a complete.

Blackberry Margarita Mocktail Version For Kids

If you have little kids who might enjoy a sip of this cocktail, use ginger ale or lemon-lime soda in place of the alcohol. It gives them a sweet drink to sip on to make them feel special. I prefer the ginger ale because I find the ginger adds a new element of flavor to the drink.

JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa shares this next recipe from their 150 Margaritas Menu. They love the Basil Mangorita because it strikes the perfect balance of herbal and sweet.

I love how the color reminds me of sunshine, and the flavors are reminiscent of the tropical beaches on the Yucatan peninsula.

Recipe Summary

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • ⅓ cup butter, cut in small pieces
  • 1 tablespoon sugar, or more to taste
  • ½ cup half-and-half
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

Process flour, oats, butter, and sugar together in a food processor until mixture resembles a coarse meal.

Stir half-and-half and eggs together in a bowl, reserving 1 tablespoon. Add egg mixture to flour mixture in food processor and pulse until it forms a soft dough.

Turn out dough onto lightly floured work surface. Press dough into a circle about 1-inch thick. Gently press blackberries into top of dough brush with reserved 1 tablespoon egg mixture and sprinkle with thyme. Cut into six wedges and transfer to a baking sheet.

Blackberry Thyme Margaritas

I'm super jealous of my sister. She lives in Oregon, and always says that if you pay for blackberries in the summer, you've done something wrong. I love going to visit her for many reasons, but a plethora of blackberries is certainly up there. Here, blackberries are one of the more expensive fruits, but I love them so much, I buy them anyway.

When I was searching for a margarita recipe to make over the weekend, I came across this one. There were several "interesting" combinations, such as celery, jalapeno, and pineapple-chile. This one was certainly different, but I was intrigued. The thyme was very understated, and I think just added a nice fresh and herbal note to the drink. The blackberries gave the drink a gorgeous hue, and you can't go wrong with tequila, right?

  • 18 blackberries
  • 3 small sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 1/3 cup tequila
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1 Tablespoon orange liqueur, such as Cointreau
  • 1/4 cup sparkling wine or sparkling water

Combine the blackberry puree, ice, tequila, syrup, lime, Cointreau, and sparkling wine into a blender. Puree until smooth and well combined. Divide between glasses, and garnish with additional thyme and the reserved blackberries
