I was tired of eating barbecued baked potatoes the old fashioned way with loads of butter, so I created this simple recipe to put a little twist on them. My family and friends love them and I hope you do too.

- 4 large baking potatoes, quartered
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons dried rosemary
- salt to taste

- Place the potatoes into a large pot with water to cover. Bring to the boil and cook over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes, or until tender.
- Preheat the barbecue to medium-high heat. Drain potatoes and toss with olive oil, black pepper, rosemary and salt to taste.
- Place the potatoes skin-side down over indirect heat on the barbecue, reserving any remaining olive oil-herb mixture for using later. Grill for about 15 minutes.
- Remove potatoes to a serving plate and sprinkle the reserved olive oil-herb mixture on top.

We really loved this recipe. I fixed it just as it says,. except I put my potatoes in the microwave for 2 minutes then turned them over for another 2 minutes, cut them in half and brushed the tops with olive oil mixture. They were on the grill for about 10 minutes. Skins were so cruncy and potatoes were so tasty. Will be sure and fix them again.-13 Jul 2008
GREAT!!! This is the best with your grilled meats in the summer. I tried it as written, then made my tweaks. New potatoes (red or white) are the best. Added crushed fresh garlic instead of powder, and grilled both the skin and the "flesh" until nicely browned and crunchy on the outside. In my opinion, there's no need to drizzle the remaining oil afterwards, it tastes great as is. Make sure to add a little salt on top while they're still warm. Made this for a family barbeque, and got rave reviews. Easy to make-ahead- just pre-cook the potatoes and store in fridge with oil mixture until ready to use, then grill. UPDATE 8/19/10 I tried this basic method with sweet potatoes, cut in thick slices. YUM! Fresh Garlic and Rosemary are the best!-06 Sep 2006
I've tried this wonderful recipe with reds, yukons and Idahos, and we really prefer the first two. The consistency of those potatoes held up great to the spices and grilling. Super-flavorful, crispy outsides and soft insides. We love this recipe.-24 Sep 2004

We have all made potatoes in the oven but one of the many questions that people ask me is if you can BBQ potatoes?
Can you BBQ Potatoes?
YES, you absolutely can BBQ potatoes, and they are delicious! You can do them whole like a baked potato or, you can dice up the way my dad used to make them all the time growing up. They were one of his specialities, along with seriously the most amazing Roasted Chicken of all times. I need to get that recipe ASAP for you guys.
Back when we lived in Tucson, we could really BBQ at any time of the year because well, winter doesn’t really exist there. So while these are basically perfect for summer, you can make them any time you’re heading out to grill. Dad used to smother some chopped potatoes with butter, paprika, salt and a little pepper and then wrap them up and throw them on the grill. It was heavenly.
I wanted to add bacon and cheese, because they are 2 super important food groups that we can not ignore. So I did. And this is what happened. Loaded BBQ Potatoes.
Basically here’s the plan. You’re going to chop up some gorgeous Yukon Gold potatoes into bite sized pieces. Then you’ll douse them with some olive oil, a bit of garlic salt and some cooked bacon. Toss everything together and then wrap up individual portions in aluminum foil and throw them on the grill. A few minutes later, you’ll add some shredded cheddar cheese and some chopped scallions and serve them up alongside a nice cold beer and call it a day.

So here ya go, Loaded BBQ Potatoes. I pinkie promise these sassy tots are going to be your new fav summer side dish. And if you’ve got some vegetarians coming over (we do!) I just leave out the bacon and call it a day! Win/Win for everyone.

BBQ Smoked Baked Potatoes
When it comes to potatoes at a cookout, we most often think of potato salad, and it's a classic for so many reasons. There are many different versions of this popular summertime side dish, but when you want to switch it up and do something different, try smoking potatoes. If you've never tried it, it's an easy, hands-off way to cook potatoes and make them incredibly flavorful.
These smoked potatoes are anything but routine, as they are coated in bacon grease and an herb-spice rub before cooking in the smoker. Perfect with any grilled or smoked meat, this recipe will quickly become the favorite on the barbecue buffet.
Yukon Gold potatoes are the best choice for smoking. Their thin skins can easily absorb the flavors of the herbs and spices you'll rub all over the potatoes—along with the bacon fat. Yukon Golds also have a rich and creamy taste and texture that works as a nice contrast to the crispy, smoky skin. You can use russet potatoes if you can't find Yukons.
WHAT KIND OF POTATOES SHOULD I USE?
The type of potato is up to you!
I used Japanese sweet potatoes here but regular Idaho or Russet potatoes will work as well.
Traditional orange-fleshed sweet potatoes or yams are also a great choice.
Baking times may vary slightly among varieties but you&rsquoll likely need at least 1 hour in the oven for all potato types before they&rsquore soft and tender enough. If you can press them with your finger and they feel soft and squishy, they&rsquore ready!

To save time, I started the potatoes in the microwave before wrapping in foil. I just made two potatoes, so baked them in a toaster oven. I also used bacon bits to save some work. Served with a salad, and that made a delicious dinner!

This is delicious, I used bacon bits instead of the bacon. The stuffing mix was so creamy and flavourful. I baked it in the oven this time but what a great summer BBQ recipe!
Toppings for Stuffed Baked Potatoes
You can go as minimal or as extreme as you want with these potatoes. They’re your creation, after all! So, mix and match toppings as you please. I even recommend preparing a bunch of toppings and having them available buffet-style for your family or guests to load up their potatoes for a fun potato bar!
Here’s a few suggestions of toppings for these potatoes:
- BBQ brisket. Fresh or leftover both work great!
- Shredded cheese. I used Colby jack, but grab your favorite and get at it!
- Sliced green onions. Chives will also go great on these potatoes and add some great flavor as well.
- Sour cream. A classic.
- Extra butter. Another must-have.
- BBQ sauce. I drizzled some of my Everything BBQ Sauce on this potato, and my Kansas City BBQ Sauce would taste great as well! Seriously, though. Grab your favorite and go to town. . These candied jalapenos add the most incredible punch of flavor to any and all BBQ.
- Sliced tomatoes. If you love tomatoes, these will add a nice and fresh bite to your potato.
- Diced onions. A little crunch never hurt anyone.
- Chopped bacon. Dude. Chopped bacon on a baked potato is beyond amazing. You can even get EXTRA fancy and make you own Homemade Smoked Bacon and use the leftovers for this potato. . For more smoky flavor, add a spoonful of some homemade smoked salsa!
- Black or pinto beans. Ya know, just in case this potato wasn’t stuffed enough.

If you are having these with a smoked meat… In your opinion, which works best? Using the same smoke flavors as you are using for the meat or is it better to use a contrasting flavor?

I have been using your recipes for about a year now and have not done one that was not off the hook good,I appreciate that you give all the ingredients to the rubs sauces and maranades and you use several different type of smokers and grills your our not tied completely to one company that is rare and refreshing keep up the great job.

Baked Sweet Potatoes on the BBQ
One of my favourite things to make for a summer cookout are baked potatoes on the barbecue and these sweet potatoes are just the next logical step. I’ve been making baked potatoes for years in the oven, but I started making them on the barbecue back in 2011. (Side note, I can’t believe that post is from all the way back in 2011!).
Recently I’ve shifted to making more baked sweet potatoes on the barbecue because they are just packed with nutrients. It’s so simple and you end up with a perfectly cooked, nutrient packed side dish (sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins).
It’s kind of amazing, if I do say so myself. I like to top mine with a touch of sour cream (you could also use yogurt as a substitution), fresh chives from the garden and a touch of smoked paprika or chilli powder.
May I also suggest my grilled sweet potato wedges if you’d like to try some more sweet potatoes on the barbecue!
I’ve really been soaking up the warm, sunny days and enjoying a barbecue (or two) pretty much every weekend. I don’t see this pattern changing anytime soon, there isn’t anything better to do in the summer, is there? Whether it’s chicken skewers, burgers or grilled vegetables I love spending time outside grilling up a storm.
Plus, it’s just too hot to turn on the oven inside, so co complaints for every meal grilled.
Now, I’m definitely not what I would consider to be a grill-master, but I have learned a few things about the grill over the years. That said, I do overcook pork and burn chicken on a regular basis (what can I say, I’m a work in progress) but this recipe for baked sweet potatoes is foolproof.
You literally cannot mess it up. If you’re going to be heading to a potluck over the summer and you’re a little nervous about what to bring, I highly recommend this recipe.

And don’t forget the toppings! I topped mine with some sour cream, chili powder, cumin and fresh chives from the garden. A touch of cilantro would also be a great addition. You could even go ahead and add some black beans, corn and other favourite taco elements and make this baked sweet potato into a meal.
I love when a meal can be made entirely using one heat source, the oven in the winter and the grill in the summer. With these baked potatoes, you can put your side dish worries aside.
The best part is, these can be prepped in advance, just wrap a few sweet potatoes in foil and bring them out to the campsite or up to the cottage. I find that figuring out dinner on the way up north after a full week of work can be a challenge, but having dishes that can be prepped in advance make it that much more simple.
I also like to make regular baked potatoes on the barbecue as well, that way you give people the option if for some reason they are a little crazy and don’t love sweet potatoes!
